About This Role:

Downs and Osborne County are in need of innovative ideas and a marketing plan to remain vibrant. An intern with marketing skills or community development expertise can help improve our image, suggest ways to utilize empty store fronts and create a marketing plan. Assistance is also needed in the areas of website and social media development. Informal interviews would be conducted with businesses, local organizations and officials to gain a sense of the culture and needs within the community and the county.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.

Downs, KS

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Conduct interviews with local businesses, organizations and elected officials to learn about the culture and needs.
  • Educate community members and businesses on various social media platforms.
  • Inventory area businesses, services, hotels/motels, restaurants, other amenities and tourist attractions.
  • Develop a marketing plan for Downs and Osborne County which could include print media, website improvements and social media platforms.
  • Present plans at a town hall meeting for public input.
  • Provide reports to the Downs City Council and the Osborne County Commissioners.
  • Share information about the project at civic clubs and community organizations.
  • Community service or volunteering with a community organization is highly encouraged. Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.
  • Participate in any professional staff development that may be available.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in marketing, communication studies, graphic design or regional and community planning are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position will require travel connected with official duties, including attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle, and a valid driver’s license. Intern will be required to provide their own computer with necessary software.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided at the home of Mike and Ces Reinert.
