Salt Lake County Community Relations Paid Internship in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah


The successful candidate will support the Office of Mayor Ben McAdams in Salt Lake County's work with community outreach and engagement. The internship is specifically designed for candidates with a strong interest in government and political affairs and presents an unrivaled opportunity to learn about constituent relations and community partnerships. The internship with the Salt Lake County government will focus primarily on supporting the members of the Mayor's office and Community Engagement and Outreach team with a variety of projects and administrative goals. In addition to the county-level work, the internship will also expose interns to state and federal work. A mentor will be assigned to guide and assist the intern's development and growth.

This is a paid internship; the intern will receive $7.25/hour and can work up to 220 hours during the term. Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. There may be occasional work on the weekends.


Candidates should be self-motivated. Students with a focus in Communications, Social Sciences, Political Science, Behavioral Science, or Humanities are preferred; but, all applicants are welcome. Preferred candidates will have completed sophomore level status in a Bachelor degree program OR be enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Excellent writing and communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Web and technical communications experience a plus.


  • Assists in oversight of the Salt Lake County Mayor's Office Outreach work, including updating important contact lists.
  • Researches community events and calendars throughout the county.
  • Develops, organizes, and executes outreach events.
  • Updates information on the community engagement and outreach website and posts on the platform Nextdoor or on other media.
  • Composes general letters, spreadsheets, e-mail, and memoranda from rough drafts or general instructions.
  • Assists the Salt Lake County Boards and Commissions Manager and Volunteer Services Coordinator in promoting civic engagement throughout our community.
  • Participates in the Internship Leadership events, which are most often luncheons with leaders from within the County. The purposes are to help interns build leadership skills and to provide networking opportunities.


An "At Will", FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.
