Position Summary:

The Program Assistant for the Department of English is responsible for the organization and daily operations for faculty initiatives within the department. Primary project support includes the Lazarus Project and Literary Arts Program (LAPS) and well as additional short term projects as needed. S/he will work closely with the Lazarus Project’s principal investigator and graduate project manager, the Director of LAPS and the English department administrator to maintain a timetable for current and upcoming projects and programs. Responsibilities will include website development, working with department staff and graduate students from English, Humanities & MALTS; corresponding with intercollegiate colleagues to collate project files. Coordination of weekly, annual regional meetings and conferences, publicity and schedules. The Program Assistant will report to the Administrator in the Department of English.

  • Work with each Director to maintain the program schedules and coordinate a functional timetable for current and upcoming projects, talks, conferences, grants and speaking engagements
  • Work with the Director of LAPS and associated programs to centralize the University’s Literary Arts / Creative Writing events and programs (Creative Writing, Literary Translation, The Inspiration Project, the Writer’s Guild, and the Plutzik Reading Series).
  • Develop daily/weekly schedules; managing multiple and often conflicting priorities
  • Maintain calendar of programs within the University and with external partners and clients
  • Update and maintain website for LAPS, Lazarus Project and R-CHIVE programs
  • Create social media presence and following for both programs
  • Facilitate events and lectures for both programs
  • Ordering of supplies, equipment, and making travel arrangements


Scheduling & Program Coordination

  • Develop and maintain schedules for programs, including directors, graduate student trainees, and events
  • Coordinate all aspects of both directors’ travel, conferences, events and planning
  • Ordering refreshments, supplies equipment, and making travel arrangements
  • Attend events/programs/meetings and represent the Department of English Projects
  • Provide back up support to English office as needed


  • Work with web services enhance both programs website and social media presence to promote the humanities
  • Assist in creating and distributing publication materials for programs and opportunities for students both in paper, electronic & social media formats
  • Departmental Liaison to assist students seeking additional information on multi-spectral imaging, Literary Arts / Creative Writing opportunities, internships and study abroad programs


  • Work closely with English Administrator for cost recovery & reconciling


  • Assist with file recovery from partner institutions and file conversion to Photoshop


College degree and previous office experience. Preference to candidates with strong organizational and time-management skills. Service-oriented disposition and ability to interact diplomatically with diverse constituencies. Excellent writing, analytical, and verbal communication skills with an understanding of the importance of promoting the humanities to various audiences. Social media and/or marketing skills are also preferred.
