Duties

The Director, Career Engagement for Semester in San Francisco (SSF) works within the MBA Career Management (MBACM) office to drive the strategy and oversee all aspects of student career engagement in the SSF program. This includes working with the employer services, career advising, and alumni services teams with the additional responsibility of managing strategic and execution-related aspects of the SSF program, including some budget oversight. The Director, Career Engagement holds key responsibilities to manage the ongoing institutionalization of the SSF program, which is now launching a spring semester option for students after 3 years of a fall-only option. This role provides leadership of initiatives such as alumni involvement in the SSF program, creation of career education content, and creative partnerships for connecting companies and students in the Bay Area broadly. The SSF program hosts up to 150 students annually.The Director, Career Engagement participates in the organization and delivery of orientation workshops (pre-departure and on site) as well as pre-application information sessions, participates heavily in the admissions process (events & welcome weekends, candidate selection committee), and creates programming/workshops for students related to career education.The person in this role will conduct business development with new & growing companies on behalf of MBACM, and connect students to companies including initiating and participating in career trek visits, speaker events, alumni-student networking events, and conferences where applicable. This position will align with the MBA Career Management industry teams to develop a strategic plan for maintaining the office’s quick response to changes in the economy and to changes in students’ industry choices.As a career advisor, he/she instructs, counsels, and advises MBA students and alumni on long-term career development as well as immediate job search objectives for full-time MBA positions and summer internships within specific industries or sectors that may include any industry, but most likely: Consulting, Energy, Health Care, Investment Banking, Media & Entertainment, Private Equity, Retail, Technology, Travel & Hospitality, Venture Capital, and Startups. The person in this role conducts career advising appointments with SSF students during fall and spring semesters, and will also conduct a limited number of career advising appointments (year-round) with SF-based MBA alumni or those looking to relocate to the area.To maintain high student satisfaction with the SSF program, the Director, Career Engagement acts as cross-functional, cross-departmental project manager of faculty and staff across multiple levels and locations in the Wharton School, from the Dean of Innovation and Deputy Vice Dean of Academic Affairs to Alumni Affairs and the regional alumni club. This role co-manages the coordinator in SF supporting the program. In addition, the Director, Career Engagement provides thought leadership to the SSF program by soliciting student and employer feedback through various means, such as surveys and focus groups, to make improvements while aligning with School priorities for the west coast. The person in this role analyzes and recommends policy & process changes related to SSF as part of a cross-Wharton team. He/she develops and executes communication strategies to stakeholders and MBA program staff along with senior administration. This position is based in San Francisco, reporting in to a Philadelphia-based team. Much alignment with the Philadelphia campus is required, though self-sufficiency and autonomy are valued in this role.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree and 7 years to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.* Industry exposure (Consulting, Energy, Health Care, Investment Banking, Media & Entertainment, Private Equity, Retail, Technology, Travel & Hospitality, Venture Capital, and Startups) or proven ability to ramp up quickly on new subject matter* Demonstrated project management experience* People management experience preferred* Strong communications skills and ability to work across multiple levels of stakeholders* Career advising background preferred* Experience in sales or business development preferred * Ability to travel to Philadelphia a few times a year
