The School of Arts and Sciences forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world’s leading research universities. We teach students across all 12 Penn schools, and our academic departments span the reach from anthropology and biology to sociology and South Asian studies.


The Associate Director in the Fels Institute of Government (Fels) is responsible for providing comprehensive career advising services for MPA students, coordinating the final capstone project with students and instructors, assisting with the admissions process, and supporting all aspects of administering the Fels MPA programs. As the career advisor, the Associate Director will provide one-on-one career counseling to students and recent alumni, assisting them in creating an individualized comprehensive career exploration and job search strategy, and empowering them to make decisions associated with their career goals and objectives. S/he will review and critique resumes and cover letters; conduct mock interviews; and maintain continuous with students and recent alumni regarding employment opportunities and career objectives.The Associate Director will also develop and present workshops that help students develop skills such as interviewing, networking, and general job searching techniques. S/he will plan and execute career day events including day trips to NYC and D.C. S/he will introduce and integrate creative approaches and solutions to the design and delivery of career advising programs and services, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and integrating best practices related to career services program development. In support of students’ capstone projects, the Associate Director will help students develop capstone projects that are developmental and compatible with their career goals and objectives. S/he will support capstone instructors by coordinating capstone advisors and facilitating communication of timelines, expectations and logistics.The Associate Director will also support all aspects of the admissions function for the EMPA and MPA including meeting with prospective students and facilitating on-campus visits, leading information sessions, conducting interviews, evaluating candidate application materials, and organizing Admitted Students’ Day and Orientation.The Associate Director will maintain and develop strong external networks that will provide students with diverse, relevant, and strategic opportunities for career development, internship opportunities, capstone projects, and mentorship relationships. S/he will conduct ongoing employer outreach and continually expand the network of nonprofit, government, and for-profit organizations.


A Master’s degree and 2 to 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. 7-10 years of professional experience in relevant positions is strongly preferred. The Associate Director must have sound judgement; proven organizational and leadership skills; demonstrated success in implementing strategic and management goals; excellent communication skills, both written and oral; and a successful track record of working as part of a team. Qualified candidates must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends.
