The Associate Director of Career Services (Associate Director) in the Fels Institute of Government (Fels) is responsible for providing comprehensive career advising services for MPA students. As the career advisor, the Associate Director will provide one-on-one career counseling to students and recent alumni, assisting them in creating an individualized comprehensive career exploration and job search strategy, and empowering them to make decisions associated with their career goals and objectives. The Associate Director will review and critique resumes and cover letters; conduct mock interviews; and maintain continuous with students and recent alumni regarding employment opportunities and career objectives.The Associate Director will help students develop capstone projects that are developmental and compatible with their career goals and objectives. In collaboration with Fels faculty and staff, lead efforts to maintain and build strong, productive partnerships with local organizations and government agencies in order to develop relevant and strategic capstone project opportunities for studentsThe Associate Director will develop and present workshops that help students develop skills such as interviewing, networking, and general job searching techniques. Plan and execute career day events including day trips to NYC and D.C. Introduce and integrate creative approaches and solutions to the design and delivery of career advising programs and services. Cultivate a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and integrating best practices related to career services program development.The Associate Director will maintain and develop strong external networks that will provide students with diverse, relevant, and strategic opportunities for career development, internship opportunities, capstone projects, and mentorship relationships. Conduct ongoing employer outreach and continually expand the network of nonprofit, government, and for-profit organizations.
A Master’s degree and 2 to 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. 7-10 years of professional experience in relevant positions is strongly preferred. The Associate Director must have sound judgement; proven organizational and leadership skills; demonstrated success in implementing strategic and management goals; excellent communication skills, both written and oral; and a successful track record of working as part of a team. Qualified candidates must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends.
