School/Center Overview

The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at the University of Pennsylvania, was founded in 1963 and is a non-collecting museum. It is also one of the only kunsthalles style museums in America. ICA exhibitions aim to bring under-recognized artists to the attention of the broader world, with an international reputation as a premier venue for contemporary art and culture. The ICA is free for all to engage and connect with the art of our time. As part of the University of Pennsylvania, our artist-centric program is complemented by the intellectual rigor of a premier academic institution. On average, we have seven exhibitions yearly, and one on tour.

Represent ICA’s Dietrich Director in person, online, in written and telephone communication, and manage Director’s schedule. Staff the Director. Assist with development and maintenance of relationships with internal and external stakeholders incl. major donors, board of overseers, Provost’s and President’s Offices, horizontal UPENN colleagues, faculty, artists, community and campus partners, as well as 26-person ICA staff, rotating interns, students, and visitors. Undertake Director’s special projects as needed incl. speech writing, research, copy editing, museum staff events, and helping to organize and track the museum’s strategic planning process and updates. Prep for and work at ICA public events, programs, and meetings as needed. Assist senior staff and all communications between Director’s Office and Curatorial, Curatorial Affairs, Marketing, Development, Public Engagement, and Administrative departments. Make travel arrangements, keep calendar of, and reconcile travel/entertainment receipts and prepare reimbursements for Director and, at times, the Development Director. Manage ICA’s work-study and internship program through recruitment, retention, and professional development opportunities.

ICA seeks a detail-oriented, professional multitasker with excellent communication and superior problem-solving skills to assist busy director of world-renowned kunsthalle working towards curatorial excellence, increased invitations to campus and community partners, and to exceeding expectations of artists and audiences.
