Position Summary

The Career Coach provides comprehensive college-to-career coaching services to undergraduate students in one-on-one and group settings, and prepares and delivers workshops and programs across campus, with a focus on the needs of undeclared majors and international students. This position works closely with the Employer Relations team to assist in developing career paths and opportunities for international students.

About the Work Unit

The Career Center serves undergraduates enrolled full-time in all Vanderbilt schools and colleges, and we also provide career coaching to recent graduates (0-2 years out). We provide ongoing opportunities for students to learn about and explore professional opportunities, including career coaching, workshops, career panels, career fairs and field trips and more. We have many resources available to help you prepare for the world of work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategicindividual and group coaching as well as programs and workshops around careerassessment, career/major decision-making, career development, social media, andcollege-to-career transitions to Vanderbilt international and undeclared majorstudents, utilizing latest research and coaching techniques from positive psychologyand appreciative inquiry.

  • Create webpage andhandout content, and other marketing/informational materials supportingstudents in career and major selection, developing internships and summerexperiences, learning about the job market and the myriad opportunitiesavailable to all majors and international students. Design creativecommunication strategies (social media; email; etc.) to provide targetedcommunication to students and enhance student experience with the CareerCenter.May be asked to develop andmanage a peer coaching staff of undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Work with the EmployerRelations team to identify potential employment opportunities focusing onpart-time, internships, summer jobs, and international employment. Assist theER team with events, special programming, and employer information sessions.

  • Enhance Career Centerrelationships with faculty and administrators across campus by serving as a keyresource for career development and career planning programs for undeclared andinternational students with the Commons, student residences, studentorganizations, Immersion, and other venues to expand students’ opportunities.

  • Maintain accuratestatistical reporting of activities through DoreWays and internal reportingsystems.Work with team to assessoutcome and value of programming and services.

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree inany subject and at least three (3) years of experience in career services orcollege student support services, including counseling, educationalprogramming, working with faculty and employers, and administrativeresponsibilities OR Master’s degreein counseling, higher education, international studies, or related field, andat least 1 years of experience in career services, human resources, or anequivalent setting providing career placement activities.

  • Thorough knowledge ofall aspects of career decision-making and the job search process including:career assessment instruments, resume-writing, job search correspondence,interviewing (including behavioral interviews) and the summer job/internshipsearch.

  • Ability to conductindividual and small group coaching sessions using an active goals-orientedcareer coaching model such as appreciative inquiry or positive psychology.

  • Demonstrated success inprogram and/or project management for at least one year. Experience with orknowledge of peer student programs.

  • Knowledge ofinternational job market and ways to access opportunities worldwide.

  • Knowledge of a broadrange of careers and employment opportunities for students starting their collegeexperience.

  • Excellent verbal andwritten communication skills; strong interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • High creativity,innovativeness, and an entrepreneurial style.

  • Strong initiative, withthe ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Responsible andindependent nature: able to set goals and achieve them.

  • Ability to maintainconfidentiality of records and information.

  • Ability to work eveninghours and a flexible schedule as needed.
