The USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Office of Communication and Marketing, is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic professional to join our high-performing team.
As a member of the Office of Communication and Marketing at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, the content and media strategist plays a critical role in building awareness of, and affinity for, the USC Annenberg brand through the development and execution of effective storytelling for external and internal audiences.
The content and media strategist's primary focus is on external media relations, writing press releases and serving as the main contact between administration and faculty and outside media channels. This position is responsible for writing stories, primarily for the web.
Develops strategies for cultivating and maintaining effective working relationships with writers and editors in the print and electronic media – on national, regional and local levels. Determines priorities for media outreach and strategy. Determines and organizes media pushes to align with school priorities and strategic initiatives.
Responds to media requests for information about USC Annenberg and its administration, faculty, staff, students and research centers.
Writes and disseminates press releases that highlight the achievements of USC Annenberg’s faculty, administration, students and/or staff.
Writes and edits stories for the school’s website and publications.
Determines and selects stories within the school to promote externally. Determines the best way to tell the stories and determines appropriate faculty and/or staff to include.
Writes pitch letters and other marketing vehicles, as required, and follows- up to secure coverage. Coordinates coverage with other university departments, as appropriate.
Works with communications specialist to promote stories and coverage by outside media through our internal social media channels.
Promotes and arranges interviews between USC principals and media representatives. Coaches faculty and/or staff pre-interview and follows-up with media source to promote resulting stories.
Compiles and distributes press kits, as needed. Provides additional promotional materials (may include biographies, statistics, photographs, audio and video tapes), when appropriate.
When assigned or appropriate, entertains media representatives to advance professional relationships. Provides additional services to members of the media such as tours of the campus or other USC facilities, introductions to USC Annenberg administration and faculty, etc., as necessary.
Manage and complete multiple assignments, often with competing deadlines.
Track analytics across different platforms on an ongoing basis to understand trends and inform best practices.Analyze, review and report on effectiveness of campaigns to maximize results.
Remains abreast of current events and trends in the media relations industry to maintain competitive edge.
Build relationships with constituents such as faculty, administrators, students and alumni to encourage cross-promotion of all content and to stay up-to-date with faculty research and campus news and events.
Undertake special projects and assignments and other duties as assigned.
4 plus years of experience in planning and executing media campaigns that successfully meet strategic goals.
Ability to identify newsworthy stories from academic programs and research.
Ability to work under tight deadlines with a variety of constituents to reach well-defined goals.
Proven expertise working in media relations with top-tier news outlets.
Track record of successfully placing stories in top-tier news outlets and peer journals.
Excellent writing skills and an ability to develop and write for a range of editorial voices.
Experience in substantive writing, across a variety of styles, including press releases, feature, news, marketing and social media.
Experience with analytics and reporting.
Demonstrated understanding of refining messages to meet audience needs, through production of clear, credible, relevant and impactful content.
Excellent command of the English language and facility in spelling, grammar, usage, and style consistent with professional writing and editing standards.
Ability to compose clear and concise communications.
Interpersonal skills to develop and maintain close working relationships with academic leaders, colleagues, faculty, staff, students and supporters.
Ability to initiate activities independently and organize, prioritize and complete work in a timely manner amidst competing deadlines and requests.
Minimum Education:Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, public relations, English and or a related field.
Preferred Experience: 4 years of professional media relations experience; writing experience in higher education preferred.
