The Union Pacific Railroad Museum (UP Museum), located in Council Bluffs, Iowa, houses one of the oldest historical corporate collections in the nation. The collection includes artifacts, photographs and documents that trace the development of the transcontinental railroad and the American West. The collection includes approximately 500,000 images, including glass plates, slides, negatives, and prints. The collection also includes the largest and most comprehensive collection of A. J. Russell's photographs documenting the construction of the UP Railroad from Omaha, Nebraska to Promontory Summit, Utah. These photos are recognized as one of the most important American photographic series of the nineteenth century.
The UP Museum business plan is to digitally capture significant images in its collection as a method of preservation to ensure American history is preserved for future generations. This will also enable the UP Museum to furnish its digitized image library for use by Universities, other museums, print publications, scholarly journals, websites, and historical exhibits.
The Intern UP Museum position will plan and organize images identified for digital scanning process; index the digital assets produced, and re-house images. Process will be performed with top-of-the-line technology and innovative archival concepts. Experience gained should be a value-add for candidates seeking future employment in the museum field. Additionally, the Intern will assist with general museum operations.
The UP Museum is currently accepting online applications for a year-round college internship. Work schedule consists of approximately twenty hours per week and can be flexibly designed to accommodate academic schedule. To receive consideration, applicants must be currently enrolled in a college degree program with a major discipline declared in Museum Studies, Library Science, History, or Public Administration.
