** This position is a for-credit externship position only, in a company participating in the Corporate Counsel Externship Program; you may not apply to this position unless you have applied and been accepted into the Fall 2018 program. POSITION SUMMARY:

The law student will have the opportunity to work with MassMutual’s Law and Compliance teams supporting a variety of its US businesses. The student will be expected to work between 12-20 hours per week and will receive compensation. The student will be located at 470 Atlantic Avenue in Boston, but may occasionally travel to other local offices and/or MassMutual’s headquarters in Springfield, MA.

Under the supervision of experienced Distribution Law attorneys, the law student will have the opportunity to further develop legal skills and substantive knowledge, as well as learn about the in-house practice of law. In addition to the Law Department, the law student will be exposed to a variety of departments within the company, which may include Compliance, Audit, Finance, Operations, Product and others.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Legal research and writing

  • Analyzing existing and proposed laws, rules & regulations

  • Reviewing, drafting and/or negotiating contracts

  • Participating in trade association and client meetings

  • Advising on operational issues

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Must be a Boston University School of Law student enrolled in the Corporate Counsel Externship Program.

  • Basic understanding of financial and insurance products, including applicable regulations

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to collaborate and maintain strong working relationships

  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical and problem solving skills

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship both now and in the future

EDUCATION :

  • Application deadline: April 20, 2018.

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least one full year of law school prior to start of position

ABOUT DISTRIBUTION LAW

The Distribution Law team is responsible for supporting the legal needs of the MassMutual U.S. (MMUS) and MassMutual Financial Advisors (MMFA), organization. MMUS and MMFA offers both proprietary and nonproprietary insurance, investments and retirement products through a network of over 9,000 career agents, as well as brokers and third party distributors. Working closely with their business and compliance partners, attorneys in this practice group provide securities and insurance regulatory advice to officers, directors and employees of several company broker-dealers, investment advisers and insurance distribution organizations which conduct business in 50 states and Puerto Rico. Section attorneys interact with federal, SRO and state regulators, actively participate in industry trade associations and provide technical support for Government Relations’ lobbying efforts.
