DIRECTOR, STRATEGIC TALENT MANAGEMENT

*The Advancement Resources & Strategic Talent Management team supports over 200 staff members across 17 schools and colleges to advance the mission of the Development & Alumni Relations team. Comprised of 5 team members reporting to an Associate Vice President, the team manages finance, administration, operations and all aspects of strategic talent management for the division. *

JOB SCOPE

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Advancement Resources and Strategic Talent Management (AVP) and working closely with the senior cabinet and University leadership, the Director will build, develop and retain a high performing advancement team to support the goals of the University through alumni engagement and fundraising and reinforce DAR’s reputation as an employer of choice and best in class talent program. In collaboration with University Human Resource partners and leading practitioners in the field, the Director will be an active member and thought leader on the national stage of strategic talent management in the not for profit sector.

As the University closes the Choose To Be Great Campaign, the key priorities will be to take current staffing initiatives to the next level in preparation for future growth and develop and implement a strategic talent management program that represents best practice in the industry.

An important focus will be to oversee the division’s talent acquisition efforts, including creating a best practice program of proactive recruitment and retention with a focus on identifying and growing top talent and increasing diversity. This includes managing the full life-cycle process for all functional areas of talent acquisition including organizational branding, job specifications, candidate selection and management. An important area of focus will be to develop acquisition and engagement analytics and metrics to measure success in these areas as the University plans for future growth.

The Director will design and execute effective programs and initiatives to develop the DAR team in the following areas: diversity and inclusion, internal and external learning and professional development, job competencies and career growth models including succession planning, career counseling, mentoring, and management and leadership.

TALENT ACQUISITION 50%

  • Develop a deep understanding of BU’s campaign goals, themes, structure, and plans in order to create an integrated strategy for talent acquisition that directly supports the business of DAR and the needs of the Campaign, including planning for the future. This includes developing a sophisticated understanding of the business of advancement and the current market forces in the war on talent in our industry, as well as the need to source, retain, and grow a more diverse team and creating a culture of inclusion.

  • Represent DAR at industry gatherings, conferences and other key on and off campus events to identify and recruit talent while marketing DAR as a best place to work. This will include both local and national travel and building a reputation as a thought leader among global peers. Become an active member of a national network of advancement talent management leaders; attend/participates in professional organization (e.g., CASE, AFP, CUPA, Advancement Learning Network, AADO) talent management conferences, workshops, programs, and other initiatives. Develops local, regional, and national network of professional colleagues.

  • Personally develop and cultivate a pipeline of talent, especially for front line fundraisers with a strong emphasis on creating a diverse pool of candidates. This will include conducting personal outreach, meetings, and creating engagement opportunities to source staff. This will also include building and maintaining an applicant tracking system and managing the internal BU applicant process and communication.

  • Directs all marketing and outreach for DAR branded talent acquisition vehicles. Supervises Talent and Operations Associate in advertisement of position descriptions and all recruitment marketing vehicles including: social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter and targeted email campaigns, DAR Talent Management website, and all collaterals and materials therein. This will include partnering with Alumni Relations Networks team members to utilize the BU Alumni Association’s resources and access to alumni as well as working with the Development Communications team to create effective DAR and BU branded products.

  • Oversees partnerships with managers and University HR partners during all phases of the search process for current job postings, screening of applications, candidate interviews, and reference checking. Works closely with the hiring managers and Associate Director of Advancement Operations to ensure best practice candidate experience, including developing training and protocols for managers. Ensures Boston University’s commitment to hiring a diverse workforce is executed in every search. This will include building an effective program to manage the high volume of informational interviews and transferrable skills individuals.

  • Directs and manages relationships and processes with executive search firms, when employed, to ensure quality, efficiency, and monitor search costs. This will include making recommendations and working closely with hiring managers across the division and University partners in Finance and Human Resources.

  • Develop acquisition related metrics such as quality of hire, cost per hire, time-to-fill, open positions, career growth, and diversity hiring data to develop recruitment/retention strategies that will reduce unwanted turnover across the division and increase engagement.

TALENT ORGANIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT 40%

  • Creates and manages working competency models to integrate with career path maps for all professional job families in the division. Enhances and manages current competency models for all professional roles. Ties in competency models to the Performance Review process, career paths and learning and professional development offerings, including redesign of the existing Performance Review to address DAR fundraising cycle.

  • Works closely with managers to identify professional development opportunities for staff and develop effective strategies, plans and policies surrounding succession planning and career progression. Manages staff expectations via individual counseling, clarifying policies and strategizing on career path options. Identifies training and skill development needs for staff and develops external professional development resources.

  • Partners with AVP and senior staff to assess staffing and create transition plan for end of Campaign, including potential staffing up for new campaign. Works closely with senior cabinet and HR partners to make recommendations in design of organizational structure for future growth, including gathering and analyzing benchmarking data.

  • Develops and manages staff mentorship and internship programs to ensure retention and growth of all staff with an emphasis on growing and retaining a more diverse staff.

  • Builds and oversees a robust program of internal DAR training and knowledge sharing, skill development, team building, and staff engagement—e.g., lunch-and-learn programs, staff-developed/staff-led workshops and courses, All Staff meetings, HR partner programs, etc. Creates analytics to measure effectiveness and ROI of all training programs. This includes maintaining a current offering of programs and content, and serving as an advisor for external professional development. Consults and partners with central HR’s Organizational Development & Learning department, outside providers, and others on programs and initiatives that benefit DAR staff. Manages and implements all programs with external partners.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT/OTHER 10%

  • Serve as partner and advisor to AVP and STM team in employee relations, recognition programs/events, performance management, onboarding/off-boarding, staff engagement efforts and events, central HR programs and partnerships, and other duties as required to effectively manage and retain a high performing team and maintain a thriving office culture to meet divisional goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in higher education talent management with emphasis on an external facing role in talent acquisition. Hands on management experience with strong record of talent development including sourcing, hiring, training, growing, and retaining high performers and developing tools and programs therein. Track record of developing training and mentoring programs and active involvement and leadership with professional industry organizations. Stellar interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to build relationships in a highly collaborative environment is a must. Excellent professional presentation with strong executive presence, good judgement, and an engaging demeanor. Experience and comfort with presenting to a wide variety of audiences. Experience using and managing social media for external marketing. Must be extremely customer service oriented and have exceptional attention to detail. Ability to manage confidential information a must. Unwavering commitment to BU’s efforts in diversity and inclusion.
