Position Description:The Education Coordinator Internship will assist with the development foundations and framework of a new curriculum-based, partner-collaborative education program at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Georgetown/Washington, D.C. Internship duties include:

  • Meet with school districts and assess the resources

  • Review the Education and Interpretation plan for targeted grades,

  • Review other canal programs and decide on which may be applicable/modify and deliver to make field management observations

  • Matching resources to subjects and expand resources

  • Pull together park resource studies and earmark what is needed to prep staff/ teachers – training plan

  • Teacher’s workshop to develop foundations of a program

  • Working out the details for transportation and safety issues

  • Initial piloting using existing programs

This work will require outreach to local teachers; coordinating meetings/teleconferences with teachers, park staff and partner Georgetown Heritage; organizing supplies and materials; development of outreach and marketing tools including web and social media content; conducting research on Park resources; and helping to coordinate special events. Interns will also learn about the Park and National Park Service, and will have ample opportunities to attend workshops, training courses, and shadow other career fields as professional development opportunities. The position will be stationed in a Park field office (Georgetown/Washington, D.C.) and will report daily to the C&O Canal Georgetown Interpretive Site Supervisor or Program Manager and work with partner Georgetown Heritage. The position will interact weekly and will be co-supervised by the Park’s Education Program Coordinator regarding projects, programs, training opportunities, etc.This position is 44 weeks, but there is potential for an 8-week extension to make it a full-year position.

  • Location Description

The position is stationed at a Park field office in Georgetown, a historic community of Washington D.C. The site features a watered canal and outdoor spaces.

Curriculum development, partnerships, planning, outreach, program delivery techniques, classroom management, learning styles, interpretive personal and non-personal services, visitor services, safety, as well as training in career-specific fields

Education opportunities include access to Park and Regional National Park Service Training, Fish and Wildlife Training Courses, online education-related webinars, shadow opportunities. Recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking.
