Internship duties include:

  • Organizing and conducting monthly beach cleanups with the public

  • Assisting with environmental education and interpretation

  • Mechanically and chemically treating exotic vegetation

  • Compiling habitat management records and suggesting future plans for exotic plant control activities

  • General facilities and ground maintenance including trail clearing

  • General administrative functions (paying bills, answering the phone, etc.)

  • Designing new visitor services signage plan

  • Summer shorebird surveys - monthly

  • Captive animal care (once a week - mostly reptiles)

  • Managing Refuge social media accounts (Facebook)

    *This position may require weekend and holiday work *The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge has a small staff where everyone helps out with everything. One day you could be assisting with sea turtle monitoring and the next day you could be mowing the grass. We are looking for an intern that is ready to be part of the team and jump right in.

  • Location Description

Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge consists of 1,091 acres and is located in Hobe Sound, Florida. The Visitor Center and headquarters is located at 13640 SE Federal Hwy, Hobe Sound, FL.

  • Training Provided

The intern will have multiple training opportunities including small equipment safety training, UTV/ATV training and possibly even prescribed fire training.

The intern will be provided with multiple opportunities to sit-in during various meetings and attend lectures to further their education.

Refuge is somewhat remote, would need personal vehicle to perform routine personal needs. The road to the nearest town is very busy and does not provide an adequate bike lane or sidewalk.

Intern will be housed in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom bunkhouse with up to two other roommates. Intern may have to share a bedroom and bathroom with 1 other person.
